TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West did what it had to do Thursday.
The Titans tied Petoskey 1-1 to clinch their fourth consecutive Big North Conference soccer championship — and 13th overall.
West needed a win or tie to win the title outright. Traverse City Central could have forged a co-championship with a Petoskey win.
With the tie, the Titans finished 10-1-1 in the league, Central 10-2.
“Congratulations to all our seniors,” West coach Jason Carmien said. “This was the last game they’ll play on this field and they enjoyed it.”
After a scoreless first half, West took a 1-0 lead on Alex Patten’s unassisted goal. Petoskey tied it when Ben Hoffman converted.
Both teams had chances.
“It was a great game,” Carmien said. “Back and forth.”
West hit the crossbar a couple times while Petoskey had the ball in the box a couple times late on throw-ins.
“It was close,” Carmien said. “There were chances to be had. (Goalie) Justin Kraft came up big.”
Kraft finished with eight saves.
West, 12-6-3 overall, will face the Central-Alpena winner on Wednesday in the Division I district at the Coast Guard field.
TC Christian 1
Jacob Rorick’s goal 30 seconds before the end of the first half was all the scoring Traverse City Christian needed to take a 1-0 win from Leland.
Cam Beemer assisted on the goal, which allowed the Sabres to improve to 12-7 on the year. Leland, which lost for the first time since a Sept. 7 setback against Cadillac, fell to 16-3-1.
David Bump made 10 saves in goal for Christian and was helped on defense by the play of Dennis Alekseyenko, Daniel Weber, Michael Klettner and Wes Nelson. Christian outshot the Comets 6-3.
Christian closes out the regular season today at Saginaw Nouvel.
Glen Lake 4
Glen Lake scored four first-half goals and that proved to be plenty in a 4-1 victory over Kingsley.
