Trojans bow out of regional
TRAVERSE CITY — Tenth-ranked Grand Haven upset No. 3 Traverse City Central 5-4 in Division 2 hockey regional action at Howe Arena.
The Bucs scored the game-winner with nine minutes left and held on for the victory.
Mitchell Ward had knotted the game up at 4-4 off a Jon Russell assist in the third period. Cooper Macdonell’s second score of the game drew Central within a score in the second stanza.
Macdonell scored off Nico Saco and Cam Givens assists to make it 2-3 earlier in the second. Givens scored the Trojans’ first goal.
“We didn’t play anywhere nearly well enough defensively, especially in the first (period),” Central coach Chris Givens said. “If it wasn’t for a bad first, I thought we could have beaten them.”
Central finishes the season 23-4. Bill Vermetten made 21 saves in goal.
“We had a great year,” Givens said. “I’m proud of these kids. They accomplished a lot of firsts — going undefeated in the Big North again. Losing in the playoffs doesn’t take anything away from this season.”
