West prevails, Central falls

CALUMET — Hockey night in the Keweenaw.

Traverse City West scored two unanswered goals in the third period Friday to win at Calumet 3-1. Meanwhile at Hancock, the host Bulldogs bolted out to a 3-0 lead and then held off Traverse City Central 6-4.

At Calumet, Michael Lake snapped a 1-1 tie at the 11:04 mark of the third period — off an assist from Jordan Stevenson — for the game-winning tally. Jake Saxton iced it with an empty-net goal with 10 seconds remaining. John Linenger and Caleb Breithaupt assisted.

The game was scoreless after the first period. Stevenson connected at the 10:01 of the second period off assists from Lake and Jacob Benker. Calumet tied it four minutes later.

“We had 20 shots on goal in the second period,” West coach Jeremy Rintala said. “That was our best period of hockey this year.”

The Titans finished with 40 shots. Sophomore goalie Tyler Buchanan came up with 30 stops for West (2-2).

“He played really well for us,” Rintala said. “They had some good chances.”

West plays Hancock today at 3 p.m.

Central found itself in an early hole and could not recover in its loss to Hancock.

Hunter Kero and Wade Hanke netted two goals apiece for the Bulldogs (3-0).

All four Trojan goals came on the power play — two by Cam Givens and one apiece by Parker Hebden and Alex Oliver.

“We were 4-of-5 on the power play, which is petty good,” Trojan coach Chris Givens said. “They’re a good team. They skate well, move the puck.”

Central outshot Hancock 28-21. Givens has two nephews playing for the Bulldogs, including goalie Jacob Givens.

Derek Shrank and Rhys Adle had two assists for the Trojans, who face Houghton today at 1.
