Glen Lake one of four Top 10 teams at Manistee National

MANISTEE — Glen Lake pulled a surprise a year ago as a No. 5 seed to finish second in the Division IV golf regional, earning a berth in the state finals.

The Lakers will not be able to take any team by surprise today in the 14-team regional field at Manistee National.

That's because Glen Lake is one of four Top 10 teams in the field. Harbor Springs at No. 6 has the highest ranking.

"We've beaten everybody who's in it," Lakers coach Paul Christiansen said. "But, like with Harbor, we've beaten them twice, they've beaten us three times. They are definitely the favorite. They have been playing some really good golf lately, probably their best golf of the season, so it's going to be interesting."

The Lakers played Manistee in a match at Manistee National before Labor Day. The Lakers also played the course Sunday.

"I'm excited," Christiansen said. "We're as ready as we're ever going to be."

The top three teams advance to the state finals, along with the top three individuals not on a qualifying team.

Harbor Springs has won four invitationals this season and is led by Ellen Breighner and Abby Detmar, who average in the low 80s.

Grayling checks in at No. 7, Ludington at No. 8 and Glen Lake at No. 10.

Glen Lake is paced by freshman Nichole Cox, who also cards a low 80s average. As a team, the Lakers are shooting 384.

"We had our second best round a week and a half ago in the Ludington Invitational," Christiansen said. "We shot a 369. But you don't know what's going to happen. It's golf.

"But I do know the girls are going to give it their best and we'll see where things fall."

Traverse City West will compete in the 12-team Division I regional at East Kentwood today. The field includes No. 6 Holt and No. 8 Rockford. The Titans are led by sisters Taylor and Hunter Kehoe.

Traverse City West, with Amelia Pezzetti leading the way, joins Petoskey in the 14-team Division II regional at Midland on Thursday. Midland Dow at No. 5 is the only ranked team in the regional.
