Prep Sports Roundup: Fast start propels Liberty to 3-1 win

CHARLEVOIX — The TC Liberty opened a 2-0 lead at half Friday en route to a 3-1 season-opening soccer win at Charlevoix.

Freshman Kelli Mannes netted an unassisted goal to get the Liberty started. Suzanne Britten made it 2-0 off an assist from freshman Emily Mackey.

Charlevoix’s Leah Davis scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out to cut the deficit to 2-1. But Macy Schwert’s penalty kick with about five minutes remaining restored the two-goal advantage.

Sophomore Brin Forlenza was in goal for Liberty, Gloria Greene for the Rayders (1-1).

The Liberty travel to Kalkaska on Monday.

Kingsley 7

Northport 0

Ally Kintner scored three goals and assisted on two others as Kingsley rolled to a 7-0 win over Northport.

Autumn Goggin contributed two goals, Becky Lint a goal and two assists and Ally Clark one goal.

Erica Karsten and Tiffany Fashbaugh combined to make six saves in goal for Kingsley (1-0), which competes in the Houghton Lake tournament today.


St. Francis sweeps

St. Francis tuned up for today’s Essexville-Garber Invitational with a pair of dual meet wins in Midland.

The Gladiators, ranked No. 3 in Division 4, beat Bay City All Saints 7-1 and Saginaw Nouvel 8-0.

Posting wins over All Saints: Amanda Bandrowski (6-0, 6-0), Natalie Burke (6-0, 6-0), Bethany Richey (6-0, 6-1), Chloe Lodge-Bailey Chouinard (6-0, 6-2), Courtney McCardel-Carlee McCardel (6-0, 6-0), Sarah Stayman-Rosie Wilson (6-0, 6-0) and Jenna Tomczak-Jessica Pax (6-0, 6-0).

Earning wins over Nouvel: Bandrowski (6-0, 6-0), Burke (6-0, 6-0), Richey (6-0, 6-1), Alex Middleton (8-2), Lodge-Chouinard (6-0, 6-2), the McCardels (6-0, 6-0), Stayman-Wilson (6-0, 6-0) and Tomczak-Pax (6-0, 6-0).

TC Christian 1

Kelci Mohrman posted a win at No. 1 singles in Traverse City Christian’s 7-1 setback to Ludington.

Mohrman won her match 6-3, 6-2. The Sabres were missing four players from their lineup in the season opener.

Christian returns to action Monday, hosting Charlevoix.

Logan Briggs pitched a one-hit shutout as Traverse City Central blanked Kingsley 13-0 in the opener of a twinbill.
