Hamilla gets hat trick as Gaylord bests TC Central

TRAVERSE CITY Gaylord has options when it comes to who will score goals this season.

But in the girls soccer season opener senior Maddi Hamilla was happy to shoulder the load.

Hamilla netted a hat trick, including the game-tying goal early in the first half and the go-ahead goal early in the second half as the Blue Devils upended Traverse City Central 4-1 on Tuesday at the Coast Guard Fields.

"I was just hoping we could at least play like we've been outside and get a goal or two," said Hamilla. "This is the first day we've been outside. We have a strong forward line so it will be a mix up of all three of us (who will do a lot of the scoring)."

Sophomore Brandi Wagner tallied the other goal for Gaylord, which responded from an early deficit with four unanswered goals.

"We started out OK and we just had some fundamental defensive breakdowns that got the ball rolling for them to take advantage," said Central coach Janna Deering. "I know we have a young team and we have to learn how to bounce back from that and recover from the mistakes we made. Instead of being able to realize the mistakes we made and work on it and continue, we fell apart."

The two teams went into the half tied 1-1, despite Gaylord owning a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The tide turned in the second half though, as the Blue Devils found the back of the net three times over a 15-minute stretch. The Blue Devils finished the contest with a 13-2 difference in shots.

"All three of their goals (in the second half) I can tell you exactly why we got scored on and it was defensively we were out of position," said Deering.
