Glads 5th, Trojans 7th after 1st day of tennis finals

Traverse City Central and Traverse City St. Francis racked up double-digit efforts Friday in the first day of the tennis state championships.

The Gladiators have 13 points in the Division 4 finals at Grand Blanc. The Trojans have 10 in Division 1 at Midland.

Both have one flight remaining to try to add to those totals today. St. Francis is fifth in D-4 and Central sixth in D-1.

St. Francis’ Jack Krcmarik knocked off Grosse Pointe Liggett’s Steven Kneiser 7-5, 6-4 to earn a spot in today’s No. 3 singles semifinals.

Krcmarik (33-3) extended his winning streak to 27 matches, including a second-round win over Niles Brandywine (6-0, 6-1).

Sam Holmes, Gus Danz and Patrick Burke each won one match for the Glads.

Jay Jones and Blake Bandrowski defeated Paw Paw 6-3, 6-4 in their opener at No. 1 singles.

“It was probably the match of the day,” TCSF coach Paul Bandrowski said, adding that he thought Paw Paw should have been seeded. “Phenomenal tennis.”

Victor Casler/Tyler Spigarelli and Jackson Richmond/Ryan Navin each won a match before falling. Fourth-seeded Brady Ray and Nathany Tafelsky were upset in the second round by Paw Paw, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The Glads’ opening-day’s 13 points is one shy of their output from last year’s entire tournament.

“It was a good day all in all for a young team,” Paul Bandrowski said.

St. Francis graduates just two players — Blake Bandrowski and Ray.

Central’s 10-point day has the Trojans tied for fifth place with Detroit Catholic Central as seven of eight flights scored points.

“Considering the bad draw and having only one seed, being in sixth is a coup,” Central coach Larry Nykerk said.

Central’s No. 5-seeded No. 2 doubles flight of Yani Beeker and Parker Berden downed Rockford’s John MacGregor/Ken Smith 7-5, 6-2 in the second round and then defeated fourth-seeded Troy 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to earn a semifinals berth, where they’ll face top-seeded Birmingham Brother Rice today.
