Trojans 8th after first day of Div. II state finals

From staff reports

EAST LANSING — Amelia Pezzetti shot a 78 Friday as Traverse City Central settled into eighth place after the first day of the Division II state golf finals at Michigan State’s Forest Akers East.

The Trojans are at 380, just seven shots out of fifth. Pezzetti’s 78 was the second lowest score on a sunny, breezy, mid-60s day in East Lansing.

Kate Trubac added a 92, Zoe Sobeck 103 and Abbie Crick 107 for the Trojans.

Okemos leads the 15-team field with a 326, 17 shots ahead of Birmingham Seaholm. Midland Dow is third at 349. The Chargers are followed by South Lyon at 356, Avondale at 373, Fenton at 376, St. Joseph at 377 and Central.

“If the girls step it up a notch, we could pass those three teams right in front of us,” Trojans coach Lois McManus said.

Elle Nichols of Okemos is the individual leader after day one with a 76.

The course played at 5,580 yards..

“That’s about a 1,000 yards longer than some of the courses we play during the season,” McManus said. “It didn’t seem to bother the girls, though.”

Traverse City West had two golfers — sisters Taylor and Hunter Kehoe — competing as individuals in the Division I state meet at Forest Akers West. Taylor fired an 89, Hunter a 93.

Meanwhile, on a tough course where only 17 of 90 players scored under 100, Glen Lake had two of those below triple digits to finish the first day of Division IV state finals tied for eighth at Bedford Valley Golf Course.

The Lakers, led by an 83 from Nichole Cox and a 98 from Melanie Kulanda, had a team score of 390 to tie with Harbor Springs. Both teams are only two shots out of fifth, however, in a tightly-bunched group.

“The big thing is we didn’t shoot ourselves out of contention to where we don’t have a chance to be a top five team,” said Glen Lake coach Paul Christensen. “Our goal was to try to be a top five team.”
