BOYNE CITY — Malik Smith rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns Friday night as Boyne City beat St. Francis 27-14 in a non-conference contest.
Smith scored on runs of 5, 2 and 29 yards.
Quarterback Corey Redman tossed a 78-yard scoring strike to Bradley Fouchia just before half that made it 20-7.
Miscues hurt the Gladiators, now 3-2. St. Francis fumbled a punt that the Ramblers recovered at the Gladiators 27, leading to Smith’s five-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring.
St. Francis sophomore Joe Trucco knotted the score when he busted a 60-yard run on the final play of the first quarter.
The Ramblers then took the lead for good on Smith’s two-yard run, followed minutes later on Redman’s pass to Fouchia, who got behind the Gladiator secondary.
St. Francis had problems in the red zone. In the third quarter, the Gladiators dropped a pass in the end zone, missed a field goal and then could not punch it in on a first-and-goal from the Boyne City 8. On a 4th-and-7 play, the Gladiators completed a pass in the back of the end zone, but the receiver was ruled out of bounds.
The Gladiators threw three interceptions, one that led to Smith’s final tally, the 29-yard run.
Trucco closed out the scoring, taking an option 79 yards for a Gladiator touchdown with just over two minutes remaining.
Trucco finished with 188 yards rushing on 16 attempts. Byron Bullough added 107 yards.
The Gladiators will face Charlevoix next week while Boyne City, now 4-1, hosts East Jordan.
