MHSAA honors McDonnell, Ciganick

EAST LANSING — Erin McDonnell of St. Francis and MacKenzie Ciganick of Bellaire were honored as recipients of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award during the boys basketball finals at Michigan State’s Breslin Center.

McDonnell and Ciganick will each receive a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance to be used at the university they attend in the fall. Farm Bureau Insurance awarded 32 scholarships, proportionately by school classification, to students with a 3.50 or higher grade point average who have previously lettered in at least one sport in which postseason competition is sponsored by the MHSAA.

Soo’s Esson MWJHL Coach of the Year

TRAVERSE CITY — Joe Esson of the Soo Firehawks has been named the Midwest Junior Hockey League’s Coach of the Year.

The award was voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Esson led the Firehawks to a second-place finish with a 31-10-0-1 record, four points behind the Traverse City Hounds. The two teams square off this weekend for the Veteran’s Memorial Cup championship.

The Firehawks concluded the regular season on a 12-game winning streak, and then defeated the Detroit Fighting Irish in a best-of-three playoff series last weekend to advance to the tournament finals.

The MWJHL Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year will be announced on Wednesday, Defenseman of the Year on Thursday and Forward of the Year on Friday.

Mount Clemens team to join MWJHL

TRAVERSE CITY — The Midwest Junior Hockey League has approved a membership application from the MC Monarchs franchise that will join the league next season.

The Monarchs, under the ownership of Mark and Patti Gilman, will play out of the Mount Clemens Ice Arena, with the team headquarters in Clarkston, where the Gilmans reside and run their company, Fresh Ice Hockey.
