Prep Softball Roundup: Norse capture district crown

This season may have started slowly for Suttons Bay's softball team, but now the Norse can call themselves district champions.

The Norse (6-23-1) advanced to the regional after they took down TC Christian 9-2 in the semifinals and Glen Lake 5-3 in the finals to claim a Division 4 softball district title.

Jane Hursey struck out 17 over the two games for Suttons Bay. The Norse tied the game in the top of the sixth when Hursey singled, moved to second on a bunt and scored on two passed balls. One inning later they took the lead when Tori Gauden reached on an error and scored on Veronica Anderson's RBI double. Anderson also scored to give Suttons Bay a two-run lead.

Anna Steed and Hursey had two hits apiece in the second game.

Olivia Wilcher had two hits to lead the Lakers.

In Suttons Bay's win over TC Christian the Norse won despite only collecting three hits. For Christian (6-18), Kelci Mohrman had an RBI and three hits, while Maddie White tripled among two hits.

Glen Lake reached the finals after downing Lake Leelanau St. Mary 9-1 in the semis. Madison Hill got the win and added two hits to her cause. Kari Pleva had two doubles with three hits and drove in two runs. Taylor Galla had two hits and scored three runs. Melanie Kalunda added two hits as well and Hannah Schweikert scored twice.

TCSF wins Division 3 district title

Traverse City St. Francis defeated Benzie Central 8-0 and Grayling 6-1 to capture a Division 3 softball district title.

Bailey Johnson had a double and two RBIs and got the pitching win in the championship game victory over Grayling. She struck out two and allowed four hits.

Also for the Gladiators at the plate, Kelsey Knudsen and Kerstin Colmus each had two hits and an RBI, Abbey Coger had two hits and Bridget Bussell had a double and an RBI.
