Prep Sports Roundup: TCC wrestlers clean up in tourney

TRAVERSE CITY — Due to icy conditions, several teams didn’t show up for the Haughn/Sonneman Classic at Traverse City Central.

That certainly didn’t include the hosts, who came away with 17 placers.

With a depleted field, no team scores were kept.

At 112 pounds, Cole Hooper had pins in each of his three matches and took first place for the Trojans.

Other first-place finishers included James Westenbarger (119), Hunter Luhrs (125), Drake Wables (135) and Justice Korson (145).

Traverse City West sent several wrestlers from its B team to the tournament, led by Austin Cochrane, who was 2-0 and the champ at 130 pounds. Drew Danzer was second at 145 pounds and Joseph Leal took third at 119.

Runners-up for Central included Malachi Farmer (125), David Mattson (130), Brandon Soloman (152), Bob Switzer (160), Mitch Villagomez (171), Will Irish (189), Austin Weir (215) and Sean Monnier (285).

Taking third place was Jonathan Fulton (135), Bryce DeLeon (171), Dan Steele (189) and Sam Homminga (285).

Central returns to the mat Wednesday, hosting Traverse City West, Traverse City St. Francis and Grayling.

TC West 1-4 at Rockford Invite

Vincent Priante was the 103-pound champion as Traverse City West posted a 1-4 record in the Rockford Invitational team tournament.

Priante was 5-0 at 103, while James Peck had a 4-1 mark at 215.

Three-match winners for the Titans were Caleb Harris (112) and Jonah Jasman (119), while two victories each were notched by Drew Hammer (130), Tyler Mathie (140), Mike Lambert (145), Gabe Jasman (152), Tanner Yanksi (160) and Zac Provost (171).

West returns to action Wednesday in a quad at TC Central with Grayling and TC St. Francis.
