Titans lose in district final, switch focus

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West didn’t dwell too long on its 73-5 loss to Rockford in a Division 1 wrestling district championship on Wednesday at Traverse City Central.

Moments later the Titans were already focused on Saturday’s individual districts, where a few of the Titans have a solid chance to get to regionals.

“Right now the focus is 100 percent on (individual) districts and regionals, and getting to that state tournament and really focusing on what we need to do,” said West sophomore Vincent Priante. “I’d really like to get to states. That’s my main focus. I didn’t get there last year and that was a big disappointment. I feel like this is the year I can get to states and excel.”

Priante, wrestling at 103 and 112 pounds, was the only member of the young West team that won two matches as the Titans ran into a buzzsaw in Rockford in the district championship. The Rams finished the match with 11 straight wins, eight of those coming by pin.

“We’re young. We’ve got a bright future. We’ve just got to keep working hard,” said West coach Nash Myers. “We’re starting a lot of freshmen and sophomores. In the next three or four years we’re going to have a pretty good program.”

The Titans’ highlight of the night came one match before the finals when they defeated Traverse City Central 47-25.

“That definitely felt good,” said Myers. “It’s our rival. Every time we beat Central then it’s a great day so I’m happy with that.”

Because of two voids in the first three matches, West trailed in the semifinal, 12-6. But the Titans won their next three matches and were able to prevail from there.

James Peck (215), Korey Johannson (119), Jonah Jasman (130), Tyler Mathie (140) and Mike Lambert (152) all won matches by pin. Caleb Harris (103) and Zac Provost (160) won by void.
