Prep Sports Roundup: Trojans edge Salem in OT


Cam Givens scored 3 minutes, 5 seconds into overtime, with assists to Alex Oliver and Andrew Froese, to give Traverse City Central a 2-1 win over Plymouth Salem at the Scott Miller Memorial Holiday Invitational on Saturday at Centre ICE Arena.

Givens’s score was his second of the game, the first giving the Trojans (5-5-1) a 1-0 lead in the second period. Cooper Marshall assisted on the first goal for Central.

Salem tied the game in the third period, the only score allowed by Central netminder Darrell Carlisle, who made 24 saves.

The Trojans host Grandville on Jan. 3.


Toledo St. John Jesuit 5

Bay Reps 0

Toledo St. John Jesuit scored four goals in the second period as it cruised to a 5-0 victory against the Bay Reps in action at the Miller Memorial Holiday Invitational.

St. John Jesuit held a 1-0 lead at the first intermission before it exploded in the second period. St. John Jesuit outshot the Reps (3-6) 26-20.

Marquette 42

TC West 16

Marquette used a variety of trapping defenses to stifle Traverse City West on the way to a 42-16 win over the Titans at the TC Classic.

The Redettes held West (1-5) scoreless in the first and third quarters, before the Titans scored 13 points in the final period. Marquette led 15-3 at the half.

Marquette was led by Hunter Viitala with 14 points. West, which was playing without two key offensive weapons, was led offensively by Mikenna Ray with six points and Hannah Mead with five points. Paris Wagner grabbed eight boards.

The Titans host Petoskey on Jan. 6.

Midland Dow 41

TC Central 25

Midland Dow used a 12-3 third quarter to pull away from Traverse City Central in a 41-25 victory at the TC Classic.

The Trojans (1-6) were down 23-17 at the half, but couldn’t recover after the third period. Central, which was coming off a 42-point loss to Marquette the day before, turned the ball over 18 times after committing 38 turns against Marquette.
