Prep Sports Roundup: Trojans strike early in 6-3 win

From staff reports

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central scored 14 seconds into the game Friday night en route to a 6-3 win over Midland in the Scott Miller Holiday Invite at Centre ICE.

Jordan Runkel netted that goal on the first shift off an assist from Derek Schrank.

“We had good jump in the first period,” Central coach Chris Givens said. “We outshot them 17-4 in the period. It was a good turnaround from the last few games.”

Central added a second goal in the period with just 1.8 seconds left when Cam Givens netted the first of his three goals. That one was unassisted.

The Trojans put it away with four goals in the second period. Cooper Marshall scored off an assist from Buddy Rose and Andrew Froese. Givens notched the next two on the power play. Schrank drew assists on both. Alex Oliver and Rhys Adle also picked up assists. Parker Hebden added the final goal with Joe Videki assisting.

Jack Boyce had 13 saves in goal.

Central takes on Plymouth Salem at 3:15 today.

Jason Newel scored three goals as Plymouth Salem rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Traverse City West 5-2 in the Scott Miller Holiday Invite at Centre ICE.

The Titans (3-6) opened the scoring about seven minutes into the first period on a Jacob Benker goal. That came off assists from Nick Schultz and Jake Saxton.

The score went to 2-0 when John Linenger scored on a back door play from Saxton.

Then Salem took charge, scoring two goals to end the period and two more in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Salem ended it with an empty-netter.

“The effort was OK for the most part,” West coach Jeremy Rintala said. “We’ve got to get over the hump, make some plays, be more defensively responsible.”
