MCBAIN — Cadillac rallied from a 47-45 deficit with 1:27 remaining to overtake host McBain on Thursday and post a 50-47 victory.
Senior Jalen Brooks, who paced the Vikings with 20 points, converted a clutch three-point play after making a steal to give the visitors a 48-47 lead with 40 seconds to go and then Andrew Emington drained a pair of free throws with 5.9 seconds left to push the lead to 50-47.
McBain senior guard Grant Gugle drove the ball up the floor and got off a 3-point shot before the buzzer but it fell just short.
Cadillac led 23-20 at the half in the seesaw battle before McBain came back to take a 34-33 lead after three quarters. The lead changed hands seven times in the final period before Cadillac finally pulled ahead for good on Brooks’ three-point play.
Justin Liptak tallied 10 for the Vikings (1-1) and Lewis Finch hit for seven.
Sophomore guard Cole Powell produced a game-high 21 points for McBain (1-1), including three from beyond the arc. His final trey temporarily put McBain ahead 47-45. Sophomore Hunter Kitson connected for nine.
James Schrader scored 15 points and Denny Hall 13 as Bellaire defeated Ellsworth 53-27 in a non-league game.
Bear Lake 86
Bryson Waller led three Bear Lake players in double figures in an 86-47 season-opening win over Onekama.
The Lakers scheduled opener Tuesday against Walkerville was postponed until Jan. 11 due to weather.
Waller put up 25 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Riley Merrill added 15 points, four rebounds, five steals and three blocks and Tyler Johnson chipped in 11 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.
Onekama was led by 14 points from John Acton, 10 by Dallas Hearit and nine from Jarrett Sovereign.
Bear Lake (1-0, 1-0 West Michigan D League) travels Tuesday to Pentwater.
