Prep Basketball Roundup: Alpena bests Central in district

From staff reports

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central shot 22 percent from the field Wednesday in dropping a 48-42 decision to Alpena in the Class A district basketball semifinal here.

The Wildcats (7-14) will face Traverse City West for the title on Friday at West.

Central (5-17) hit just 16 of 72 shots from the field. The Trojans were 4 of 34 in the first half when they fell behind 17-11.

“The fact we were even in the game was amazing,” Central coach Heather Simpson said.

It was 31-22 after three quarters.

Morgan Allen scored 12 points and Elizabeth Trelfa 11 for the Wildcats. Sierra Fraser led Central (5-17) with 19 points.

“We had some opportunities,” Simpsons aid. “Our defense created some steals, but we couldn’t make a shot. Everything that was falling Monday (at Petoskey), just wasn’t falling tonight.”

Central will graduate six seniors.

“I’m so appreciative of what they did for our program in kind of a transition year, in buying into the system and putting forth the effort,” Simpson said. “If you’re going to lose, I’d rather go down fighting and these kids fought all year. For only winning five games, every day they brought effort and every day they stayed positive.”

At Kingsley

Kingsley 23

Manistee (21-0) earned a trip to the Class B district championship game at Kingsley with a 48-23 win over the host Stags.

Lily Travis had nine for Kingsley.

Manistee led 15-10 after the first quarter, but broke the game open in the second and led 28-13 at the break.

The Chippewas face Mason County Central for the district final on Friday.

CLASS C

Elk Rapids 54

Johannesburg 45

It will be a Lake Michigan Conference district final.

Elk Rapids, getting a 25-point, 17-rebound performance from Rachel Hintz, defeated Johannesburg-Lewiston 54-45 in the opener of Wednesday’s district twinbill in Charlevoix.
