Boys Basketball Roundup: Gladiators top Pine River

PINE RIVER — Despite a sub-.500 record, St. Francis proved Monday just how good of a team it can be.

Byron Bullough scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as the Gladiators rallied for a 71-61 non-league road win.

Pine River (16-2) came into the game ranked No. 7 in Class C.

“This is a good win for us,” St. Francis coach Keith Haske said.

Bullough hit three 3-pointers in the second half as the Gladiators (8-10) used a 26-15 edge in the fourth quarter to pull away.

The Gladiators’ big men, Noah Phillips and Tanner Kenney, also had big games. Phillips finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Kenney 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Skyler Nelson led Pine River with 19 points. Mitch McDonald added 15 and Lucas Harris 14.

St. Francis turns around and travels to Glen Lake tonight.

Pine River won the JV game 55-40. Marek Laucky netted 13 points and Michael Hegewald 10 for the Gladiators.

The Traverse City Central freshmen beat the St. Francis freshmen 56-36. Ben Sherwin scored 10 points and Nik Norton eight for the Trojans, who were coming off a 43-39 win over West. Norton had 18 points in that game. Carson Rosa netted 13 for West.

TC West 68

Ogemaw Heights 55

Traverse City West pulled away from Ogemaw Heights in the second half and claimed a 68-55 victory.

The Titans (9-10) held a 31-27 lead at the break, but took control in the second half.

Stephan Sheppard led West with 17 points and Deion Dyal added 14.

Dylan Zettel led Ogemaw with 19 points, while Ben Hartley scored 15.

The Titans are at Big Rapids on Thursday.

West (16-3) won the JV game 76-35 as Caleb Corwin had 19 points and nine rebounds and Nick Brzezinski 16 points.

The Titans (14-4) took the freshman game 50-32 as Jacob Fewins scored nine.

 

Bellaire 62

Gaylord SM 41

Bellaire jumped out to a 21-4 first quarter lead as it clinched a share of the Ski Valley title with a 62-41 win over Gaylord St. Mary.
