Traverse City West held Gaylord 26 points below their season average for scoring and handed the Blue Devils their first conference loss of the girls basketball season in a 37-21 win on Friday at West High School.
The Titans (7-11, 7-4 Big North) trailed 7-6 after one period, but limited Gaylord to 14 points the rest of the way, including two in the final period. The loss, coupled with Cadillac’s win over Alpena, dropped Gaylord out of first in the Big North. Cadillac is a half-game ahead of the Blue Devils.
Kiley Kreple had 14 points and six rebounds and Paris Wagner had eight points and 11 rebounds for West, which hosts TC Central on Thursday.
Gaylord (12-5, 9-1) was paced by Brandi Wagner with eight points.
Gaylord won the junior varsity game 35-24 with Sara Sievers scoring 11 points for West.
Gaylord also took the freshman game, 47-17.
TC St. Francis 53
Elk Rapids 23
Traverse City St. Francis held Elk Rapids to five first-half points in rolling to a 53-23 victory over the short-handed Elks.
Elk Rapids was playing without key starter Rachel Hintz.
St. Francis (16-2, 12-0 Lake Michigan) held a 15-2 lead after one period and 23-3 at the half.
Sarah Carney led the Gladiators with 18 points, Juliana Phillips had 10 points and seven boards, and Lydia Arthur added seven points and six steals.
Paige Granger led Elk Rapids with eight points.
St. Francis is at Charlevoix on Tuesday.
TC Central 34
Traverse City Central played evenly with Manistee over the final three quarters, but the first quarter doomed the Trojans in a 49-34 loss.
Manistee outscored the Trojans 17-4 in the opening period.
Abby Underwood scored 12 points on Senior Night to lead Central (4-13). Emily Kott had 13 points and Annie Fuller added 11 for Manistee (17-0).
Central won the junior varsity game 42-24.
Emily Jenkins had nine points and Korean exchange student Michelle Chun scored two.
