Prep Sports Roundup: TC Central wraps up Big North hockey crown

GAYLORD — Traverse City Central clinched the Big North Conference championship on Wednesday and the Trojans did it in a convincing way.

Four Central players scored multiple goals and 10 lit the lamp in total as the Trojans mercied Gaylord 14-2.

Cam Givens, Alex Oliver, John Peters and Derek Schrank each scored twice for Central, which broke a 1-1 tie with six goals to end the first period and seven more to start the second period.

Givens and Oliver had two assists to go with their goals, while Cooper Marshall and Parker Hebden also had scores and contributed four points.

Other goals came from Reilly deTar, Zach Bohrer, Joe Videki and Noah Batcha. Bohrer, Videki and Jack Stevenson had two assists each. Single assists went to deTar, Derek Becker, Drew Girard-Pampu and Andrew Froese.

Darrell Carlisle stood in net for the Trojans and made four saves.

Central (13-8-1, 7-1-1 Big North) steps out of conference to play Muskegon Mona Shores on Saturday.

GIRLS HOOPS

Gaylord 50

TC Central 38

Gaylord used a fourth-quarter run to pull away from Traverse City Central, 50-38, in a Big North Conference match up.

The Blue Devils, undefeated in league play (9-0), outscored the Trojans 13-4 in the last quarter of a game that Central led early — the Trojans were ahead 12-9 after one period — and kept close until late in the second half.

Sierra Fraser and Callie Bartkowiak each had eight points for the Trojans (4-13, 4-7). Sydney Kassuba had 12 for Gaylord (12-4).

Gaylord won the junior varsity and freshman games. Montanna Brumfield had seven in the JV’s 36-17 loss. Gaylord won the freshman game 53-31.

Boyne City 69

Grayling 61

Rainy McCune scored 25 points to lead Boyne City past Grayling 69-61.

The Ramblers had to hold off the Vikings in the final quarter as Grayling tried to erase a 13-point deficit entering the fourth.

Cierra Prosser had 26 points and six assists, and Sammy Denno chipped in 22 points and 12 rebounds for Grayling, which is at Charlevoix on Friday.
