TRAVERSE CITY — With Major League Baseball scouts looking on, Traverse City West’s Walter Borkovich dominated Tuesday in pitching the Titans to a 10-2 win over crosstown rival Traverse City Central in the opener of a Big North Conference doubleheader.
Borkovich, a Michigan State recruit, allowed three hits and one earned run. He struck out 11 to improve to 4-0.
The Titans, who won the nightcap 12-2, are now 8-0 on the season.
West also swept Central in softball and beat the Trojans in soccer Tuesday.
“It’s a good day to be a west-sider,” Titans baseball coach Matt Bocian said.
Borkovich was backed by a 16-hit attack. West (12-2) scored four in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull away. Trent McDougall’s three-run double highlighted the sixth while Keegan Kenny smacked a two-run homer in the seventh.
Will Reed had three hits for the Titans and Collin Bush, Max Ludka and Geordon Carter two.
McDougall earned the win in game two. Carter, Ludka, Reed and Donny Cizek all had two hits. Cizek homered in the contest. Ludka, meanwhile, drove in four runs, three on a bases-loaded triple in the fifth. Carter added three RBIs.
In softball, the Titans swept Central by scores of 4-3 and 4-1.
Molly Longton earned the opening-game win, striking out three and giving up five hits. Amber Brautigam had two hits and Kelly O’Hara drive in two runs for West (5-10, 3-3 BNC). Central’s Miranda Winowiecki hit a home run among her two hits, Jessica Budz had two hits and Eliza McCall doubled twice.
Carley Drzewiecki fanned seven, tossing a two-hitter in the nightcap win. O’Hara had two more hits and two runs, while Drzewiecki doubled. Maddy Duensing doubled and Budz tripled for Central (3-7).
