Volleyball Roundup: Titans sweep, advance

West faces Central in semis on Saturday

TRAVERSE CITY -- Host Traverse City West earned a 25-5, 25-10, 25-10 win over Gaylord Tuesday in the Class A district opener.

The Titans (17-17-3) will play host TC Central on Saturday in a semifinal. The match will follow the Marquette vs. Alpena semifinal at noon.

In Tuesday's win, West had seven kills, three aces and four blocks from Gaby Muller, 12 kills and four aces from Ellen Patenaude, seven aces from Gabby Corwin, five digs from Courtney Saxton and seven kills from Kelly Flynn.

CLASS B

Benzie Central, Kingsley move on

Northwest Conference powers Kingsley and Benzie Central advanced to the Class B district semifinals at Benzie.

Kingsley, the league champion, set the stage for a showdown with Big North champion Cadillac by turning back Ludington 25-18, 25-10, 25-17. Kingsley (55-6-6) and Cadillac meet tonight.

Benzie (50-11-5) upended Reed City 25-18, 25-27, 25-20, 25-14. The Huskies take on Manistee tonight.

In its win over Ludington, Kingsley was powered by Hannah Bach (16 kills, 12 of 12 serving, four blocks), Sam Zubalik (nine kills, 15 of 17 serving, 15 digs), Chelsea Edgcombe (five kills, 7 of 7 serving, three blocks, five digs), Lauren Leach (six kills, four blocks), Erica Berridge (31 assists, 8 of 8 serving, seven digs) and Katie Nickerson (21 of 21 serving with two aces and 12 digs).

Benzie was led by Sara Thurkettle (20 kills, five blocks, six digs, 20 of 21 serving with four aces), Haeley Melton (seven kills, seven blocks, nine digs, 22 of 22 serving with two aces, four assists), Jenna Scheele (13 kills, six digs), Corrie Noah (four kills, two blocks, six digs, 11 of 11 serving), Kate Masell (16 digs, 13 of 13 serving with one ace, two assists), Nova Mroz (eight digs, 13 of 15 serving with one ace) and Raenee Harig (35 assists, five digs, one ace).
