Huskies take regional titles

Huskies' Nye second overall

BENZIONIA -- Host Benzie Central hoisted two regional trophies on Saturday.

The Huskies finished first in both the boys and girls Division 3 regional meets, as part of a full day of cross country.

In the girls race, Benzie won with 27 points. Taylor Nye was second in 19 minutes, 32 seconds, Jill Louisignau was fourth (19:58), Michaela Carnegie was fifth (20:00), Theresa Warsecke seventh (20:23) and Marika Grabowski ninth (20:38).

Kingsley's girls also qualified with a second-place showing. Kirstin Volkening was eighth (20:35), Samantha Krause was 14th (21:12), Alex McNair 20th (22:01), Alexis Keena 21st (22:03) and Katie Bembeneck 26th (22:20).

Individually, Manistee's Kelly Schubert was third (19:35), Charlevoix's Molly Jeakle was 10th (20:40) and Laura Bailey from Elk Rapids was 12th (20:43). All three qualified for the state finals.

In the boys race, Benzie won with 35 points, followed by Mason Co. Central (59) and Charlevoix (65).

The Huskies had a fourth-place showing from Rick Jones (17:03) while David Rhodes was fifth (17:09), Tom Smeltzer was seventh (17:17), Talon Morris was eighth (17:18) and Robert Kerby was 11th (17:23).

Charlevoix's Eric Buday was second (16:44), Kirk Acharya was 10th (17:22), Andrew Plude 12th (17:24), Neil Salisbury 16th (17:40) and Alex Gooch 26th (18:34).

Matt Moss from Elk Rapids qualified by placing 13th (17:25).

Races were also run for Divisions 2 and 4. The state finals will be next weekend at Michigan International Speedway.

Division 2

Gaylord 2nd in both boys and girls D-2 regional

Gaylord was second in both the boys and girls meets.

The Blue Devil girls were second with 85 points behind champion Cedar Springs' 54.

Gaylord had Amanda Olds ninth (20:15), Megan Borgenson 10th (20:16), Kassuba Anna 15th (20:32), Katelynn Dreyer 18th (20:39) and Geena Duff 34th (21:17).

Cheboygan's Tori Overton was fifth (19:54) and Cadilla'c Britta Patterson was 11th (20:18).

In the boys meet, Fremont won with 52 points while Gaylord had 91.

The Blue Devils placed Bryan Slocum 13th (16:55), Jayden Hesselink 14th (16:56), Charlend Howard 19th (17:03), Jones Joe 21st (17:18) and Nate Fischer 24th (17:25).

Cadillac's Ryan Hearth was fifth (16:40), Cheboygan's Seth Duncan was sixth (16:41) and Petoskey's Nate Ismond was ninth (16:44).

Division 4

Manton, GT Academy, TCSF girls qualify in D-4

Manton's girls finished first (38), Grand Traverse Academy was second (65) and Traverse City St. Francis was third (65) as all three qualified for the state finals.

Stepanie Ingraham from Manton won in 19:46. Teammate Katie Raymer was fifth (20:49), Courtney Roth was 12th (21:26), Sonny Jenkins 13th (21:27) and Giselle Gomez was 15th (21:35).

GT Academy placed Sophie Schuetze sixth (20:52), Stephanie Horning 10th (21:06), Alysia Campos 16th (21:43), Rowan Estenick 22nd (22:33) and Lindsey White 27th (22:53).

Maddy Danz from St. Francis was second (22:22), Sarah Arthur ninth (21:05), Addey Meachum 21st (22:32), Jessie Michelin 24th (22:39) and Kelly Zelinski 26th (22:52).

Individual qualifiers included Bear Lake's Jaylee Brown (third, 20:23), Tobi Schoedel (seventh, 20:56), TC Christian's Emily Ritsema (fourth, 20:43), Buckley's Haley Morairty (eighth, 21:02), McBain's Monica Randall (11th, 21:14) and McBain NMC's Sarah Dick (14th, 21:28).

In the boys' meet, Bear Lake won with 44 points followed by Evart with 51 and Suttons Bay with 67.

Suttons Bay's Ben Wynsma won in 16:26 while teammate Chase Palmer was fifth (17:46), Juan Reyes seventh (17:54), Mark Jasinski 35th (19:09) and Travis Smith 37th (19:30).

Bear Lake's Chuck Schoedel was second (17:12), Tyler Groenwald was eighth (17:55), Ryan Pienta was ninth (18:01), Alex Ringel 16th (18:19) and Lewis Bartlett 19th (18:30).

Individually, Buckley's Philip Spitzer was third (17:16), McBain's Matthew Sabo sixth (17:53), McBain NMC's Peter Brouwer 10th (18:03), GT Academy's Alex Houston 11th (18:07) and Lake Leelanau St. Mary's Aaron Helwig 14th (18:16).
