Roundup: Elks clinch share of LMC title

CHARLEVOIX -- Elk Rapids used the pitching of Garrett Gribi and Zac Dreffs to clinch a share of the Lake Michigan Conference baseball title after sweeping Charlevoix on Tuesday, 4-2 and 2-1.

Gribi scattered five hits and struck out three in game one while Dreffs tossed a two-hitter and fanned four in in the nightcap for the Elks (18-8, 10-4 LMC).

In game one, Peter Shugart had a RBI triple for Elk Rapids. Andrew Coates and Ian Sliger also drove in runs.

Cliff Jones and Michael Heckendorn had two hits for Charlevoix (13-15, 6-8).

Shugart drove in a run in game two and had one of six hits off Drew Largent. Alex Foster had the lone RBI for the Rayders.

MORE BASEBALL

TC Central 10 3
East Jordan 0 4

Traverse City Central's Kevin Krantz tossed a two-hit shutout and fanned 12 in a 10-0 win over East Jordan.

The Red Devils came back to win the nightcap 4-3 on the strength of Scott Hansen's four strikouts.

Paul Hood had a pair of hits, including a double, in the opener for Central (24-6), while Jared VanWormer and Alex Fancy each had two base hits in the nightcap. Both of Fancy's hits were doubles.

The Trojans host Midland Dow today.

Glen Lake 6 7
Suttons Bay 14 6

Glen Lake and Suttons Bay split in a Northwest Conference twinbill.

Suttons Bay (13-14, 8-6 NWC) won the opener 14-6 as Danny Holmes, Ryan Manning, Kody Herman, Bryan Belanger, Marty Glowicki and Evan Glowicki had two hits. Anthony Stewart struck out nine.

Devin Weber and Kyle Klumpp had two hits while Nick Swartz, Josh Jacklin, Weber and Klumpp had doubles.

Joe Galla's sacrfice fly gave Glen Lake a 7-6 win in game two. Galla had two doubles and two RBIs for the Lakers (15-13, 5-7). Manning and Stewart had two hits for Suttons Bay.

Frankfort 10 17
Leland 0 2

Kyle Zimmerman tossed a no-hitter and struck out 11 as Frankfort blanked Leland 10-0 in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader.

Alex Stieve had a single and a double in game one for Frankfort (21-3, 10-2 NWC).

Max Banktson struck out five in four innings as the Panthers won game two, 17-2. Wade Luxford, Cameron MacArthur, Tyler Stratton and Banktson had two hits.

TC St. Francis 3
Boyne City 2

Traverse City St. Francis played a single game against Boyne City, winning 3-2.

The winning pitcher for the Glads (17-10, 9-5 Lake Michigan) was Danny Brick who pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out eight. Spencer Ambrosious scored one of his two runs stealing home.

Buckley 4 14
Kingsley 2 2

Jacob Youker's RBI single in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and led Buckley to a 4-2 win over Kingsley.

The Bears would go on to sweep the Stags, taking the nightcap 14-2.

Josh Ledford struck out six, gave up only three hits and didn't walk a batter in the opener.

Buckley hurlers didn't allow a walk for the entire twinbill, the third time the team has accomplished the feat this season.

Zack Traylor scattered four hits in five innings to win the nightcap, as the Bears (16-13-1, 3-8-1 Northwest) erupted for a seven-run first inning, capped off by Ledford's two-run single.

Billy Wismer had two hits for Kingsley in the lidlifter.

Benzie Central 14 14
Mesick 6 2

Benzie Central took a pair of Northwest Conference games from Mesick, 14-6 and 14-2.

Cory Baklarz had four hits and three RBIs in game one for Benzie Central (10-6-1, 13-0-1 NWC). Troy Weber (two RBIs) and Matt Wichtner (four runs) had three hits while Josh Thaxton (double) and Jake Moilanen had two hits.

Ryan Olson was the winning pitcher.

Thaxton had a grand slam, a double, a single and drove in seven runs in the nightcap. Winning pitcher Micah Parshall and Weber each had two RBIs.

TC Central JV 16 7
Farwell 5 11

The Traverse City Central JV split a doubleheader with the Farwell varsity, winning 16-5 and losing 11-7.

Josh Kloosterman was the winning pitcher for Central (10-14). Bradon Dalzell and Trevor Tooley each had four hits with Dalzell driving in six.

John Oakley had two hits and Steven Smiley scored three runs in the second game.

SOFTBALL

TC St. Francis 0 7
Boyne City 3 4

Amy Brunner and Emily Buckel had three hits as TC St. Francis salvaged a split against Boyne City with a 7-4 victory in game two.

Brunner and Buckel, who had a double and a triple, drove in two runs. Heather Larsen and Tara Kellicut each had two hits with Kellicut driving in one for St. Francis (19-9, 8-6 Lake Michgan).

Brunner was also the winning pitcher, allowing three hits.

In the continuation of a suspended game from a month ago, Boyne City blanked St. Francis 3-0 despite a one-hitter from Brunner.

Kingsley 11 15
Buckley 1 2

Kingsley defeated Buckley 11-1 and 15-2 in Northwest Conference play.

Amanda Worm was the winning pitcher in both games. She allowed three hits and struck out eight in the opener and fanned five in three innings of game two.

Alexa Bach, Rachel Dorie, Kasey Boyle and Kali Weber each had two hits in game one for Kingsley (20-9-1, 11-0-1 NWC).

Amanda Ocobock had three hits and scored three times in the nightcap. Weber, Boyle and Hillary Hoeflin had two hits and scored two runs.

Glen Lake 4 12
Suttons Bay 3 2

Lauren O'Brien had a two-run, inside-the-park homer to spark Glen Lake to a 12-2 Northwest Conference victory against Suttons Bay.

Haley Sobczak had three hits, two RBIs and scored four times for Glen Lake (14-12, 9-3 NWC). Katie Drzewiecki and Rachelle Brzezinski had two hits.

Sobczak had two hits as the Lakers held on for a 4-3 win in the opener. Rebecca Reyhl and Kelli Ruthkowski had two hits for Suttons Bay.

Cori Kahler was the winning pitcher in both games. She struck out 14 in the opener and nine in the nightcap.

Frankfort 14 16
Leland 13 6

Laney Eubank hit for the cycle in the opener and Frankfort went on to sweep Leland in a Northwest Conference twinbill, 14-13 and 16-6.

Kristy Boomer added three hits for Frankfort (19-6-1, 10-1-1 NWC) while Kayla Jensen, Allison Webber and Paige Banktson had two.

Eubank, Webber, Boomer, Mindy Smith and Kirstin Kidder had two hits in the nightcap.

Webber struck out six in the second game while Kayla Nye picked up the win in game one.

Charlevoix 7 10
Elk Rapids 4 0

Hannah Hybl won both games to propel Charlevoix to a 7-4, 10-0 sweep over Elk Rapids in Lake Michigan Conference action.

Kacey Anderson led the way for the Elks (14-18, 4-1 LMC). She hit a two-run home run in the first inning of the opener and had two hits in the nightcap.

Jessie Spoor was 3-for-3 in the opener for Elk Rapids and Alex Jennings had a 2-for-2 game in the nightcap.

Mesick 4 7
Benzie Central 1 4

Mesick defeated Benzie Central in a doubleheader behind pitchers Ashley Wheeler and Courtney Clough.

In the opener Wheeler struck out three in the 4-1 win. Summer Kerns lead Mesick (16-10, 8-6 NWC) at the plate with two hits.

Clough struck out two in game two. Kerns, Erika Hamilton, Nicole Hindman, Shana Oram and Erin Hamilton had two hits in the 7-4 win.

TC West JV 7 10
Kingsley JV 6 7

Traverse City West JV swept Kingsley JV in a twinbill Monday night.

In the opening game win for the Titans, Lauren Bilinski was the winning pitcher. Haley Kanaskie had three hits while Kelly Flynn had two.

In the nightcap, the Titans downed Kingsley by a score of 10-7. Billinski and Ellen Patenaude led the Titans (21-6) with three hits.

SOCCER

Elk Rapids 5
East Jordan 0

Olivia Morrison scored a hat trick to lead Elk Rapids to a 5-0 win over East Jordan.

Elk Rapids' other two goals were scored by Jenna Hubbell and Nina Barraco. Franki Price was in goal for the Elks (12-3-2, 10-2 Lake Michigan).

East Jordan goalkeeper Maribeth Poindexter had a strong game in net making 33 saves.

Burt Lake NMCA 8
Grayling 0

Anika Vinz had three goals and two assists to lead Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian to an 8-0 romp over Grayling.

Lauren Gall added two goals while Natasha Vinz, Rebecca Leopnard and Bethany Chatfield had one for Burt Lake (12-2-1, 7-2 Northern Michigan Soccer League).

Alyssa Oram and Natasha Vinz also had assists. Chatfield played the first half in goal and Shelby Donovan the second.

Cheboygan 3
Benzie Central 0

Benzie Central finished the regular season 8-8 after a 3-0 road loss to Cheboygan.

The Huskies play at Reed City May 27 in the first round of district play.

TENNIS

TC Central Black easily wins Big North JV title

Traverse City Central Black won all eight flights to capture the Big North Conference JV title.

Black finished with 24 points. TC Central Gold JV was second with 16 points followed by TC West JV and Petoskey with 14 points.

Winning singles flights for Black were Audrey Lyman at No. 1, Kelly Krueger at No. 2, Taylor Schultz at No. 3 and Corinne Boyd at No. 4.

Victorious in doubles were Caiti Blanke/Jennifer Matson at No. 1, Ellen Whiting/Maddy Connick at No. 2, Alex Lamey/Grace Amalfitano at No. 3 and Chloe Seymour/Claire Wodzien at No. 4.
