Roundup: West shoots Cannon to victory

Titans led by Cannon's 75, fires season-best 315

TRAVERSE CITY -- The was no getting past the Traverse City West golf team on Friday.

Not with the Titans packing a Cannon.

John Cannon carded a 75 and West shot a season-low 315 to win the Traverse City Central Invitational.

"The boys are playing real well as a team," West coach Brian Davis said. "And I think we're going to get better, too."

Cannon was second overall with his 75. Adison Monfiles of Big Rapids was medalist at the Traverse City Country Club with a 74.

West's Brian Kelly also finished in the top 10 with a 79. Shane Hoffman added an 80 and P.J. Dienes an 81.

In addition to winning the tournament, the Titans also claimed the Golden Range Bucket.

The award goes to the Central-West winner that shoots the lowest combined score with all the competitors included. That totaled 17 players on Friday with West finishing with a 1,473 compared to 1,625 for the Trojans.

Helping the Titans secure the trophy was Ian Davis, a non-varsity player that finished in the top 10 with a 78.

TC Central was second in Division 1-2 and third overall with a 322.

Shane Darrow led the Trojans with a 77. Clay Lesley added an 81 while Matt Gauthier, Brent Stevens and Andy Bump each shot 82.

Big Rapids won Division 3-4 and was second overall with a 321.

Suttons Bay was runner-up in Division 3-4 and seventh overall with a 333. Counting for the Norsemen were Charlie Olson (79), Sam Foster (81), Craig Jasinski (83) and Max Evans (90).

Also in Division 3-4, Glen Lake shot a 361, led by an 80 from Matt O'Brien. Miles Guy had a 79 to pace Kingsley (411).

Gaylord was fifth in Division 1-2 with a 326, led by a 79 from Dustin Shoff. Carter Marsh carded an 81 to lead Cadillac (334) while Ian Haven and Joe Mussio each had an 87 to pace Petoskey (352).

The TC West JV team shot a 350. Counting for the Titans were Corey Thiel (85), Aaron Greenman (87), Leland Yanick (88) and Josh Broad (90).

GIRLS TRACK

TC Central settles for second after mixup

A scoring mixup was the only thing that prevented the Traverse City Central girls from claiming the Alma College Scottie Classic title.

Okemos won the meet with 528 points, four more than the Trojans. Flushing was third with 501.

TC West was fifth with 418.5 points.

TC Central should have been awarded a win in the long jump, but the numbers of the 'winner' were transposed, relegating Maren Bahra (16'1") to second.

TC Central did finish 1-2 in the 1600 and 3200 at a meet that awarded points from first all the way to last.

Katie Perkins won both the 1600 (5:14.23) and 3200 (11:28.3) while teammate Taylor Mattarella was second in both (5:24.46 and 11:33.29).

Charnelle Lyons won the 800 (2:24.94) and teamed with Aimee Marsh, Katie Fallick and Bahra to win the 1600 relay (4:13.07).

Bahra (C) 27.36.

BOYS TRACK

TC Central places third at Alma Invitational

Evan Dancer and Jacob Secar were TC Central's only event winners, but the Trojans used an all-around effort to place third in the Alma College Scottie Classic.

Flushing won the event with 564 points, followed by Okemos (519) and Central (508.5). The invitational used a format that gave points to every entrant in every event.

Dancer won the 1,600 in 4:39.3, while Secor led a strong Trojans showing in the 3,200. Secor won in 9:36.5 and Alex Lance also broke the 10-minute mark in 9:59.5 for fourth place.

Nick Burning's second-place spot in the 1,600 (4:46.8) and Mark Alanson's sixth (4:56) gave Central 42 points in that event alone.

The Trojans host Traverse City West in a dual meet on Tuesday.

Other Central placers were:

SOFTBALL

Charlevoix 6 14
Harbor Light 2 5

Hannah Hybl, Sarah Potter and Desi Faust had three hits as Charlevoix completed a sweep of Harbor Light Christian with a 14-5 triumph.

One of Potter's hits was a triple while Amber Hoffman added two hits for the Rayders (14-6). Faust picked up the pitching win, striking out four.

Hybl had a two-run triple and Lauren Mielke a two-run double as Charlevoix won game one, 6-2. Faust added two hits to back a four-strikeout outing from Hoffman.

Benzie Central 12 15
Suttons Bay 1 4

Leah Johnson had seven hits to lead Benzie Central to a Northwest Conference sweep of Suttons Bay, 12-1 and 15-4.

Johnson had four hits in the nightcap while Ann Newberg, Jackie Frederick, Daphne Routley (triple) and Ashley Parrotte (double) had three for Benzie (7-13, 6-4 NWC).

Johnson, Adrianne Kline and Erin Fought had three hits in game one.

Kline was the winning pitcher in both games. She tossed a one-hitter and struck out five in game one and fanned six in the nightcap.

BASEBALL

Charlevoix 8 0
Harbor Light 4 2

A four-run first inning proved to be the difference as Charlevoix doubled up Harbor Light Christian, 8-4.

Drew Largent's two-run single was the big hit in the first frame for the Rayders (12-10).

Clayton Mitchell, R.J. Moore and Alex Foster each had two hits. Ty Telgenhoff tossed a two-hitter and struck out eight.

Brent Cole tossed a two-hitter as Harbor Light shut out the Rayders in game two, 2-0.

Jon Putnam also allowed just two hits for Charlevoix. Putnam also had one of the two hits for the Rayders.

Benzie Central 12 16
Suttons Bay 4 2

Josh Thaxton hit a pair of home runs to lead Benzie Central to a sweep of Suttons Bay, 12-4 and 16-2.

Troy Weber had five hits in the twinbill.

Cory Baklarz was the winner in the opener, throwing a complete-game five-hitter. He was supported offensively by Jake Moilanen (3-for-4, two RBIs), Sean Coykendall (3-for-4, two RBIs), Weber (2-for-4, double), Micah Parshall (2-for-4) and Thaxton (solo home run).

Ryan Manning and Anthony Stewart were each 2-for-3 for the Norse (10-11, 5-5 Northwest).

Ryan Olson spun a five-hitter in the nightcap as well.

The Huskies (13-4-1, 9-0-1 NWC) were led offensively by Thaxton (2-for-4, two-run homer), Weber (3-for-4), Baklarz (2-for-3, three RBIs), Coykenall (two RBIs) and Jake Jeske (1-for-1, 2 RBIs).

Manning was 2-for-2 for the Norse and Marty Glowicki had an RBI double.

Benzie hosts Hart today, while Suttons Bay plays host to Leland on Tuesday.

SOCCER

Benzie Central 3
Forest Area 0

Cheriese Radionoff had two goals to lead Benzie Central to a 3-0 victory over Forest Area.

Crystal Alton added a goal and an assist and Jennfer Harig an assist for the Huskies (6-5). Misty Stiles had the shutout in net.

TC Central JV Gold 1
Gaylord frosh 0

Lynn Seman scored the game's only goal as the Traverse City Central JV Gold notched a 1-0 win over Gaylord's freshman team.

Sarah Bevelhymer assists on Seman's goal.

Melina Bonaccini and Rachel Tomlin split the shutout in net for Central (4-4).

TENNIS

Elk Rapids 7
Boyne City 1

Elk Rapids won everything but No. 1 singles to hand Boyne City a 7-1 setback.

Winning in doubles for the Elks were Jessie Trierweiler/Emily Sosovsky at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), Brooke McMullen/Sonya Sayler at No. 2 (6-2, 6-4), Laura Bailey/Sonja Trierweiler at No. 3 (6-3, 6-3) and Megan Witt/Abbie Fosdick at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1).

Victorious in singles for ElK Rapids were Emily Wirtz at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2), Natalie Ranger at No. 3 (6-3, 4-6, 10-7) and Sarah Cunningham at No. 4 (7-5, 7-6).

Boyne City's Sydney Gahn was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles.
