TRENTON -- Shane Darrow scored the game-winner on a two-on-one breakaway as Traverse City Central knocked off Division 1 No. 6-ranked Grosse Pointe North 3-2 in overtime in the MIHL Showcase.
Darrow cruised in with Dane MacDonell on a break to pocket the winner with 1:09 left in the five-minute extra session, not long after the Trojans burned off a penalty.
"Grosse Pointe has got a nice team all around," Central coach Chris Givens said. "This was a big win against a very, very good team."
Backup netminder Dan Spencer was red hot for the Trojans, stopping 36 shots on net as Central was outshot 38-19.
Macdonell led off things with five seconds left in the first period, assisted by Alex Goodhue and Travis Clary.
After North tied it 14 seconds into the second frame, Darrow notched his first score of the night 2:58 into the same stanza, with Adam Swy and Macdonell assisting.
Grosse Pointe (8-10-1), which plays the second-toughest schedule in the state according to United State High School Hockey Organization, knotted the game up with 4:52 remaining in regulation.
Division 2 No. 8-ranked Central (13-6-1) plays Division 1 No. 10-ranked Port Huron Northern (10-8-1) today at 10 a.m.
