Bear Lake teen plays for three schools
Patrick Spalding doesn't wear his varsity jacket much. It's not that he doesn't have reason to -- the Bear Lake junior plays four different sports. However, it would likely raise a few eyebrows and force Spalding into answering a number of reasonable questions about the different letters on his colorful coat -- letters from three different Bear Lake, Onekama and Brethren.

After another successful season, Frankfort was felled in the state semifinals for the second year in a row. Beal City topped the Panthers 2-0 in their Division 4 semifinal.

Team Far ends seven-year drought
Team Near kept Team Far in check for eight innings Wednesday. But that one inning was too costly to overcome. Team Far posted eight runs in the eighth inning for a win in the ninth-annual Near-Far All-Star game at Traverse City Central High School.

Heather Sanderson was in a groove Tuesday afternoon. Much to the chagrin of the St. Francis Gladiators. The freshman right-hander struck out 15 in pitching the Rockets to a win over St. Francis in a Division 4 softball quarterfinal at Thirlby Field.

Frankfort earns semifinal baseball berth
As a state semifinalist a year ago, Frankfort knew what to expect in Tuesday's Division 4 baseball quarterfinal at Traverse City Central. Norway did not. The inexperienced Knights made a couple of costly errors and the Panthers took advantage for a 4-0 win and a second straight trip to Battle Creek for the state semifinals.

The Near vs. Far baseball all-star game will be held tonight at 5 p.m. at Traverse City Central.

Gladiators finish 3rd in the state
Kalamazoo Hackett followed up an opening-day round 286 with a 301 at Michigan State's Forest Akers East Saturday to win the state title by 19 strokes over White Pigeon. Hackett finished with a 587. White Pigeon fired a 606. Traverse City St. Francis, the defending state champions, placed third at 611.

A year ago, Frankfort ended a 17-year regional baseball drought. It didn't take nearly as long for the Panthers to hoist their next trophy.

The Kalkaska softball team has had outstanding success in recent seasons, posting a school-record 31 wins in 2008 and 29 more wins this year. One thing the Blazers have not been able to do, however, is find a way to beat Gladstone in the Division 3 regional.
