Local scouts celebrate century of history

TRAVERSE CITY —— The Boy Scouts of America have a century of history to celebrate this year.

The Boy Scouts of the Scenic Trails Council will hold a Scout-O-Rama this weekend at the Northwestern Michigan Fairgrounds to celebrate the last 100 years and look toward the next.

More than 700 Scouts are expected to camp out with another 1,000 coming for activities on Saturday. The public is also invited to see what the first century of scouting looked like and what the next 100 years might bring.

"We will have demonstrations of everything from cooking with a Dutch oven to first aid, fire building, making ice cream, recycling and geocaching," said Mark Ewing, district director for the Scenic Trails Council.

Public displays and demonstrations will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, followed by music at dusk and fireworks at 8 p.m.

Activities include Pinewood Derby racing, BMX bike racing, a paintball target shoot and fishing tank.

"Old-time scouting uniforms and patches will be on display in the Scouting Memorabilia Museum," Ewing said.

The Boy Scouts of America has served more than 100 million members since its incorporation on Feb. 8, 1910.

The Scenic Trails Council received its first charter from the National Boy Scouts of America in 1939 and serves Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Otsego, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Osceola and Wexford counties. The council serves more than 3,500 Scouts and adult leaders each year.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the gate. For more information, call 947-7071 or visit stcbsa.org.
