Hebert surges to lead at Mich. Championship

Houtteman is fourth, Crystal's Dean seventh

BATH TOWNSHIP (AP) -- Two-time defending champion Scott Hebert shot a course-record 7-under-par 65 Tuesday to take a one-shot lead at the Michigan PGA Professional Championship.

The Grand Traverse Resort pro overcame a 2-over opening-round of 74 to go five under after the second round at Hawk Hollow Golf Course.

First-round leader Mick DeKorver of Grand Rapids' Sunnybrook Country Club shot 73 and trails by one shot at 140. DeKrover is Hebert's former boss.

The first two rounds were played at Hawk Hollow Golf Course in Clinton County's Bath Township. Play shifts to the Eagle Eye course today for the final round.

"After (Monday) I knew what I had to do and I was fortunate to be on Hawk Hollow because it's a bit easier than Eagle Eye," Hebert said.

DeKorver, who has never won a major state title, said he's looking forward to playing with his former employee.

"I'll be comfortable playing with Scott," DeKorver said. "We worked together for four years and played a lot of golf together. He made me a better player. He's definitely the one to beat."

Lee Houtteman, an instructor at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, shot a 70 to move into fourth at 142. Crystal Mountain's Brad Dean is seventh at 144 after firing a 75 Tuesday.

The top 72 finishers from the 161-player field finish play today. They're competing for $62,000 and a winner's share of $7,000.
