National Trail Day to be celebrated

FROM STAFF REPORTS

KALKASKA -- Local hikers and bikers will celebrate National Trail Day at Guernsey Lake State Forest Campground.

National Trail Day is Saturday and a celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at the campground, eight miles west of Kalkaska, near the Sands Lake Quiet Area. The event marks the connection of recreational trails from Traverse City to Kalkaska.

The Grand Traverse Hiking Club, North Country Trail Association and representatives from the Traverse Area Recreational Trail and Kalkaska Area Recreational Trail worked to link the TART trail to the Vasa trail, Vasa to the NCT and the NCT to KART trails. There are now 27 miles of available recreational trails through the state forest between Traverse City and Kalkaska.

The connection will be celebrated with an hour-long hike or bike ride, followed by a picnic potluck at 11:30 a.m.

Call 223-7903 for more information or directions to the event.
