Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — They’re back, by the thousands. And whether you signed up for it or not, you’re an ambassador or sorts.
While it’s not up to Traverse City-area residents individually to see that visitors enjoy their stay, it is up to us to treat them as we would want to be treated in their shoes.
Some simple suggestions:
n No road rage. Drivers not familiar with an area make wrong turns or slow down to 1 mph to read signs; but who doesn’t in a new place? Lay off the horn and relax.
n No road rage II. Pedestrians in unfamiliar territory tend to wander, so give them a break if they cross the street in the middle of the block or stop on the sidewalk. Give parents pushing strollers room. Don’t crowd pedestrians trying to beat the light.
n Give directions, answer questions and make suggestions if you can; if you don’t know or don’t have the time, at least be polite. It’s not hard. They just want help or information, not a commitment.
n Understand that they want fresh cherries, to ride the rides at the midway, to eat elephant ears, buy cherry butter and listen to bands at the Open Space. They’re on vacation. Don’t be a snob. And remember that kids are kids and often act like it.
n Have fun. Tourists are here because they like visiting the place where we live, just as we do. Let them enjoy it.
