n To Jessica Hoover, who was expected to take the stage at the Bayside Festival Saturday to do a four-song set, perhaps the most important of her life. Jessica, 23, suffered a brain injury in December and lost her memory. She has regained portions of her past life, but much is still lost. She was to perform for the first time at the Festival.

n To Traverse City Area Public Schools and the Leelanau Montessori Public School Academy in Suttons Bay for reaching an agreement that will see TCAPS take over business administration services for the charter school. The agreement will make money for TCAPS and save money for the Montessori school, a smart use of taxpayer funds.

n To Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which will remain open well into October after dodging an early shutdown because of threatened sequestration Labor Day weekend closures of attractions like the Dune Climb, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and Platte Point. The attractions will now stay open until after the leaves change color. After a record year in 2012, park attendance is down some, but should still be one of its biggest ever.

n To the Traverse City chapter of the American Association of University Women for bringing the She Project, a national women’s creative event, to Traverse City Sept. 6. The event centers around art and will feature participants creating art works that correspond to ideas from members.

n To the International Joint Commission which has called for urgent steps to curb runaway algae in Lake Erie. The algae produce harmful toxins and contribute to oxygen-deprived “dead zones” where fish cannot survive. In 2011, the largest mass on record formed in the lake’s western basin, eventually reaching more than 100 miles from Toledo to Cleveland.

n To Amanda Wilson of East Jordan, whose poem“Stargazer” will be included ina collection of short stories, essays and poems that has been added to the prestigious ArtPrize international art exhibition and competition. It is the firs time the written word is part of the competition.
