Acme candidates, PAC didn't violate law

----

---- — In an Aug. 10 editorial, the Record-Eagle cited incorrect information provided by Grand Traverse County Clerk Linda Coburn that the political action committee Acme Changes Together violated Michigan campaign finance laws prior to the Aug. 7 primary election. Coburn told the Record-Eagle the PAC accepted several contributions that violated the state's $500 limit on township elections.

In fact, there is no such limit. Coburn said her incorrect statements were based on bad information from the Michigan Secretary of State's office.

Further, the editorial incorrectly said a pro-development slate of candidates supported by the PAC also violated campaign finance laws.

The PAC raised money to support the slate of candidates, but PAC officers said their spending was independent from the slate of candidates.
