Editorial: Workers go above, beyond

Most of us — we hope so, anyway — wouldn't hesitate to turn in a wallet or purse we found at a store or lying on the sidewalk.

But how many of us would wade into a pile of garbage 72,000 pounds big and rip through bag after bag to look for someone's wallet — without even knowing if it was there.

Earl Sutherland, a route supervisor for American Waste, and four other workers at the company's Hughes Drive plant did just that a couple weeks ago and after 35 minutes of work, "It popped right up," Hughes said.

And that's how Richard Richmond of Traverse City got his wallet, driver's license, credit card, Bridge Card and family photos back.

A merrier Christmas, for sure.
