Editorial: Sweeten Traverse City bee ordinance

---- — Now that Traverse City has agreed to allow residents to keep bees inside the city limits, the city commission should sweeten the deal.

Commissioners Monday approved an ordinance to allow residents two hives located at least 25 feet away from any neighboring home plus a six-foot-tall flight barrier to prevent bees from taking low glide paths leaving the hive and limit human/bee contact.

Enthusiasts said stings from honey bees are rare because the bees are relatively docile and avoid humans. But it's not too late to adopt a proposal to ban bees within 100 feet of a home where someone is allergic.

Residents would have to present a letter from a doctor to trigger the 100-foot ban.

Even bee backers didn't object, so why not?

It might be a belt-and-suspenders thing, but if it prevents contact between a bee and an allergic child, who's to object?
