n To Traverse City Area Public Schools’ “Cooking Matters” class, a six-week free program for parents funded through a Michigan Fitness Foundation grant. The Cooking Matters courses are targeted at schools where more than 50 percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunches. TCAPS is offering the class along with the Michigan State Extension Office. The lessons are intended to teach parents about cooking nutritious and affordable meals.
n To Grand Traverse County for conducting an initial test of its new emergency CodeRED notification system. The test recently rang roughly 25,000 phones and sent hundreds of e-mails and text messages. It’s a new notification system that allows officials to contact residents about emergencies. Residents can register through Grand Traverse County’s website.
