If Meijer Inc. thinks it has new headaches now that seven Acme Township officials have been given the green light to sue the retail giant, wait till its former allies weigh in.
Representatives of The Village, a proposed Acme mega-development, appear ready to place the blame for alleged wrongdoing against Acme officials on Meijer and its former attorneys, including Timothy Stoepker, law firm Dickinson Wright PLLC, and the Traverse City firm of Smith & Johnson Attorneys PC.
It is a classic cop out. Next to "The dog ate my homework," "He made me do it!" may be the most popular alibi of all time.
It is also a sure sign that somebody at The Village thinks it's time to cut its losses, even at Meijer's expense.
In court documents filed in a lawsuit by former Acme treasurer Bill Boltres, The Village indicated that if it wronged Boltres, so did Meijer and lawyers from firms in Detroit and Traverse City.
Boltres attorney Grant Parsons said it was the opposite of rats leaving a sinking ship. "This is a rat stating to the other rats 'welcome aboard,'" he said.
Let the finger-pointing begin.
