Torch Lake residents plan potluck dinner

eastport — The Upper Torch Lake Association will hold its monthly potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at the Torch Lake Township Community Services building on U.S. 31. All area residents are invited to attend.

Bring a favorite beverage, table service and a dish to share. Please provide a list of ingredients for your dish.

Benzie Democrats to hold Fun-Raiser

elberta — The Benzie County Democrats will hold a Fun-Raiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at the Cabbage Shed Restaurant. Cost is a minimum of $10 to the candidate of your choice: Fred Johnson (2nd District Congress), Roger Dunigan (35th District State Senate), Dan Scripps (101st State House) or Marcia Stobie (3rd District County Commission). Hors d'oeuvres will be provided and a cash bar is available.

Scouts will help 'retire' flags

INTERLOCHEN — Boy Scout Troop 20 will holds its annual flag-retirement ceremony Sunday, Sept. 19.

The ceremony starts at 2 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen. Veterans are needed to participate and should arrive at 1 p.m. for rehearsal.

Garden club hosts program on herbs

Acme — Angie Willis will give a program on herbs and their medicinal uses at the next meeting of the Sweetwater Evening Garden Club.

The group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Masonic Lodge on M-72. The public is welcome.

Observe the Moon Night is Saturday

TRAVERSE CITY — An Observe the Moon Night will be held Saturday, Sept. 18.

The event is part of an international gathering that is an outgrowth of last year's International Year of Astronomy and is being hosted by the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society. The goal is to raise awareness of NASA's involvement in lunar research and exploration.

There will be a variety of telescopes ranging from small portables to the society's 25-inch aperture 11-foot-tall telescope. Viewings will be held beginning at 8 p.m. at Clinch Marina and the Open Space, Grandview Parkway and Union Street in Traverse City.
