Seed saving workshop planned

traverse city — The Michigan Land Use Institute's Get Farming! program is presenting a workshop on seed saving for farmers and gardeners. Seed Saving Basics begins at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4, at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station, 6686 S. Center Hwy four miles north of Traverse City in Leelanau County.

The workshop will feature a panel of growers with seed-saving and plant-breeding experience, including Casey Duneagua, of Five Springs Farm; Mike Kiessel, a gardener in Leelanau County; and Craig Schaaf of Golden Rule Farm.

PJ movie morning at Peninsula library

traverse city — Kids are invited to come to Peninsula Community Library in their jammies and enjoy breakfast, a craft and a showing of "The Polar Express" at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30. The event is free of charge.

NY Eve party at Children's Museum

Traverse City — A "Countdown to Noon" and ball drop will highlight a New Year's Eve celebration for children at the Great Lakes Children's Museum.

At 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, children can make noisemakers and start a time capsule activity. They will record the day in different ways and then create a time capsule in which to place everything. Time capsule activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and volunteers and staff will be on hand to help. All activities are included in admission to the museum and are appropriate for children of all ages with adult supervision.

Entrants for Little Miss Elk Rapids

Elk Rapids — Applications are available for the Little Miss Elk Rapids Pageant.

Contestants must live in the Elk Rapids School District or attend Elk Rapids Schools. Age divisions are: Little Miss, ages 6-7; Young Miss, ages 8-9; Miss Pre-Teen, ages 10-12; and Miss Teen, ages 13-16. Competition categories include interview, talent and party dress modeling.

Applications are available at the Elk Rapids Chamber of Commerce, through Elk Rapids Schools or by e-mailing misselkrapidsinfo@charter.net. Applications must be postmarked by Thursday, Jan. 6, or hand-delivered to the address on the application no later than 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7.
