Public session on recycling programs

Suttons Bay — The Leelanau County Solid Waste Council will hold a public session on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

The session will start at 9 a.m. in the lower level of the Government Center, 8527 E. Government Center Drive. It will include a brief overview and history of the recycling programs, plus household hazardous and electronics collections in Leelanau County.

Retired colonel speaking at Dennos

Ann Wright, a retired colonel and former foreign service officer, will speak at the Dennos Museum Center on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; David Collini will provide music. The talk is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Wright served 13 years in the U.S. Army and 16 more years in the Army Reserves. She was honored for her actions during the evacuation of people during the civil war in Sierra Leone and was part of the first State Department team to go to Afghanistan and reopen the embassy there in December 2001.

On March 19, 2003, on the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Wright cabled her resignation to Secretary of State Colin Powell, citing that she could not support the invasion without the authorization of the U.N. Security Council.

Benzie County candidate forum

benzonia — Candidates for contested Benzie County Commission seats will speak at a forum sponsored by the Benzie Unit of the League of Women Voters-Grand Traverse Area at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Benzonia Township Hall.

The panel will include Roland Halliday (Independent) and Mary Pitcher (Republican) from District II (Platte, Lake and Crystal Lake Townships); and Marcia Stobie (Democrat) and Roger Griner (Republican) from District III (City of Frankfort, Village of Elberta and Gilmore Township).

All Benzie County citizens, with special reference to residents of District II and III, are encouraged to attend this program to hear the candidates express their views on issues of local importance. Each participant will have an opportunity to offer opening and closing statements, as well as to respond to questions from the audience.
