FRANKFORT -- Finding a horse-drawn hearse wasn't as easy as Gaylord Jowett thought it might be when the family of a local horseman requested one last summer.
"I made my mind up right then and there that we were going to have one for our funeral home," said Jowett, owner and funeral director of Jowett Family Funeral Homes.
Jowett took delivery of what he calls an elegant alternative from Justin Carriage Works in September.
"It has been really well received. People have told me, 'That's the way I want to go out, take me for a ride around town,'" said Jowett, who uses Percheron horses from Abraham Carriages in Mesick and Black Horse Farms, of Empire, to pull the hearse.
Jowett and his unusual hearse can also be seen in area parades, most recently in Frankfort's Fall Festival parade.
"People are surprised to see it, and curious," Jowett said.
