Spend the evening on River Street

ELK RAPIDS -- The community is invited to enjoy an "Evening on River Street" Wednesday. The 100 block of River Street will feature family fun from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be music by local band The Three B's and juggling by Trevor Babiarz, plus Ginny the Story Lady, giant games, food vendors and more. Acme Farm Market welcomes shoppers

ACME -- From kettle corn to eco-friendly soil and fertilizer, you can find it at the Acme Farm Market.

The market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 17 next to the Stained Glass Cabinet Company, 4160 M-72. In addition to watching Uncle Kenn's Kettle Corn being made, shoppers can choose in-season fruits and vegetables, homemade baked goods, plants, hanging baskets, wildflower suncatchers, soil and fertilizer, and hypertufa planters.

Cherry Fest picnic spans generations

TRAVERSE CITY -- The National Cherry Festival Intergenerational Picnic will be held on July 8 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. It is part of the week-long senior events at the festival, sponsored by the Pavilions, Traverse City Light & Power and the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

The free picnic will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on the Grand Lawn behind the Pavilion's main building on South Elmwood Avenue. In addition to hot dogs, salads and desserts, the picnic will have entertainment and games and face painting for children. Complimentary tickets are required and available at the Traverse City Senior Center and the Cherry Festival office. For details, visit www.cherryfestival.org.

Four area nurseries offer pot recycling

TRAVERSE CITY -- Bay Area Recycling for Charities and the Master Gardener Association of Northwest Michigan are working with four nurseries to cut down on the amount of plastic plant containers that end up in local landfills.

Participating nurseries are Pine Hill Village Garden and Four Seasons Nursery in Traverse City, Pine Hill Nursery in Kewadin, and Barker Creek Nursery in Williamsburg. These nurseries are recycling their own containers and will serve as collection sites for anyone who wants to bring in their plastic garden containers for recycling.

All types of plant containers including flats, seedling containers and colored pots are acceptable and should be relatively clean. The service is free and will be available through October.

New hours at Dennos Museum

TRAVERSE CITY -- New hours of operation and admission fees go into effect July 1 at Northwestern Michigan College's Dennos Museum Center.

The Dennos will add Thursday evening hours beginning July 2 and individual admission fees will rise $2 per person.

Hours of operation will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission will be $6 for adults, $4 for children and free to museum members.
