Another View: Beware of viral videos

Beware those viral videos and Internet postings bearing alarming news.

Earlier this year there was the "pink slime" scare that prompted stores, school committees and others to ban a substance that had been used as hamburger filler for decades. ...

More recently we were treated to endless showings of a video depicting a bawling toddler at a Texas Rangers game who was upset because a ball tossed in his direction ended up in the hands of a couple sitting next to him.

Turns out the couple, excited over having retrieved the ball, had no idea the boy was so upset, and later offered to give it to him. But his mother, in a too-rare display of good parenting, said she preferred her son learn to deal with the occasional disappointment. (He ended up getting a baseball tossed up to him from the Rangers dugout.) ...

It goes to show things aren't always as they seem on TV or the Internet.
