Light up the waterfront

What’s with some people in our area? The Traverse City Film Festival has made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear (Con Foster). Light up the waterfront and use it. The State Theatre has saved downtown Traverse City and the Bijou can do the same for the waterfront.

On another issue, our dear U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek supports mercury in our fish by voting against carbon caps, to say nothing of his shutdown anti-government stance. Seems like they’re still living in the ’60s? This is the 21st Century.

Will carry on research

Thank you Record-Eagle for bringing attention to the issue of micro-plastics in the Great Lakes. You may not be aware that the Inland Seas Education Association is involved with research on this issue.

During 2013 we collected samples of surface materials from Grand Traverse Bay and northern Lake Michigan. These samples will be analyzed by Dr. Mason of the State University of New York, Fredonia. We are also training our high school students on how to collect plastic samples using the Manta Trawl supplied to us by Dr. Mason.

We plan to carry on more of this research in 2014.
