A thoughtful proponent

Many people know Jan Warren as a tireless volunteer, dedicated to our community. She is an intelligent and thoughtful proponent of the area who has worked to improve the status of those less fortunate through agencies like Goodwill and supported economic development through her work on the Planning Commission. She studies the issues and is always prepared for the topic at hand.

Jan is never afraid to challenge the status quo and listens carefully to all positions. I am proud to call Jan Warren a friend. She has earned your vote Nov. 5.

Existing system broken

Now that the gun control issue has hopefully been put to bed it is time for Congress to address one of the primary causes of the incidents where mentally deficient individuals have used guns to harm others.

The area that requires addressing is mental health. The direction Congress should consider moving is the establishment of a network of regional “national mental hospitals” so individuals in need of help, including the military with post-traumatic stress disorder, can receive proper treatment.

The American Civil Liberties Union was instrumental in eliminating mental hospitals as they felt it put a stigma on those receiving treatment in those institutions. As well-meaning as the American Civil Liberties Union was with this action it is time to reconsider the need for these institutions.

I suggest that the House and Senate consider legislation establishing and funding such a system. The existing system for treating those with mental health problems, including PTSD, is obviously broken.

Contact Sen. Stabenow, who has introduced mental health legislation, and urge her to amend it to include the establishment and funding of a network of “National Mental Hospitals.” Phone (202) 224-4822 or email www.stabenow.senate.gov/?p=contact.
