Franz unresponsive

Laurel Mason rightly complains is a letter that she finds state Rep. Ray Franz unresponsive to requests for information about town meetings and global warming. He also failed to respond to “multiple calls” about Rep. Pete Lund’s revision to our election laws which would have made Romney president He seems to fail to respond rather often.

However, regarding global warming, Franz unburdened himself during his campaign. He clearly stated in a debate in Glen Arbor that global warming is “a hoax” in the opinion of “30,000 scientists” who were polled in 1998 by a poorly based group of petitioners. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences responded, “The petition was not based on a review of the science of global climate change, nor were its signers experts in the field of climate science.”

However, that humans are causing global warming is the position of the Academies of Science from 19 countries plus 27 scientific organizations that study climate science. More specifically, around 95 percent of active climate researchers actively publishing climate papers endorse this consensus position.

Franz doesn’t belong in this latter league. Or, maybe, on this issue, even on this planet.

No Russian roulette

I am writing in response to a letter written by Graydon DeCamp regarding the amount of water used from the Lake Michigan watershed for fracking. His letter is dripping with sarcasm, and I’m sure he thinks it is quite clever. Unfortunately, he omits a very important fact in his argument. After they’re done with the millions of gallons of fresh water used to frack a well, it’s a highly toxic poison liquid that can never be restored, never treated for use by any living thing. It must be disposed of “safely.” This is done on the surface, or more likely pumped back into the ground, where the industry claims it stays, and will not affect any ground water, or flow back in to lakes and streams. Of course, this is what they claim, what else are they going to say?

Our clean ground water, and our precious lakes and streams are not something we should play Russian roulette with.

And one more thing - by mentioning Chicago as President Obama’s hometown he is trying to place a link in the reader’s mind between this awful stealing of water from Lake Michigan and the president.
