Robots are not helpful

In an economy aimed at optimum happiness, the result of labor-saving devices would be more people enjoying leisure time. In an economy driven by the profit motive, labor-saving devices throw people out of work. This is what is happening now according to recent articles in the Record-Eagle which predict job losses from technologically advanced machines.

Actually, this is nothing new. In the 19th century a group of textile workers called Luddites (reportedly after the name of one of the more rabid of the workmen), destroyed machinery that was replacing their jobs. In a growing economy, Luddism is regressive because new jobs would be appearing regularly; however, in our state of chronic unemployment, robots replacing people is not helpful.

Luddism is no doubt illegal, but if a worker were to shoot the robot that replaced him it wouldn't be called homicide; not yet anyway, but in this day of calling corporations "persons" one can't be sure.

Fat tires help walkers

Thank you to the people riding the bikes with the big fat snow tires on the Boardman Lake TART Trail. With your big snow tires you have created a nice packed surface for walking on.
