$76K plus benefits?
Really? TCAPS has hired a chief of communications at a salary of $76,000 plus benefits? Why is this position necessary? And, at such a high salary for this area? How does this position help students learn better or teachers teach better? Good luck with the new bond request.
The restrictions on free speech recently put in place by NMC are inappropriate in an educational institution. But these restrictions are even more problematic where the institution in question is developing a program for the training of people who will operate drones in a civilian setting. Is this use of drones acceptable, or should it be prohibited? Should it be restricted to respect our privacy? There are many privacy and civil rights issues that need to be addressed here.
NMC’s new millage request will likely increase funding for technology programs like those of the drone operators. How will NMC handle incidents involving those who wish to question the civilian use of drones? How open will NMC be to discussions about how to balance our right to privacy with our need for security? These are hot button issues, and NMC’s recent restrictions on free speech do not bode well for the open discussion of these issues on campus. If NMC wants us to increase their millage, they would do well to reassure us that they respect our right to address sensitive issues on campus, and that they will withdraw these new restrictions on free speech.
