Let freedom ring
To conservatives in outrage over Judge Friedman’s ruling on the Michigan gay marriage ban, please take a moment to appreciate the irony. I don’t care what your feelings are on gay marriage. You love freedom. So let it ring.
How do you stand in its way? You prize personal liberty and responsibility above all else. You want the government to stay out of it. But here you are, indignantly frothing at retreating government control. Here is liberty liberated. You want it shackled. What gives?
Our Attorney General speciously claims “Michigan recognized that diversity in parenting is best for kids because moms and dads are not interchangeable.”
Let’s set aside this baseless statement for a second. Is this your rationale? Is this the road you want to go down? Gay marriage should be banned because you think it’s not optimal for kids? Should we ban guns in homes? Single parents? Poverty? Divorce? Shouting? Over-praising? TV? Candy?
If the reason to keep homosexuals out of wedlock is that you think it’s bad for kids, then we should rightly outlaw anything anybody thinks is bad for kids. Bigotry is bad for kids. Let’s start there.
