Skills for life

Regarding Jason Gillman's comments about fine arts programs in Traverse City Area Public Schools, he states, "I find it irrelevant, an unproductive use of my time," when invited to check out Central High School's auditorium. Really? Well, then it is a good thing for the citizens of Grand Traverse County that his term as a county commissioner expires this year.

I thought when you hold a public office that you had an obligation to all the citizens, not just to "yourself," and therefore you should be willing to investigate all sides of a situation. How many other times has Mr. Gilman not bothered to check something out just because it did not fit in his personal agenda?

I wonder if the term, "well rounded" means anything to Mr. Gilman. That's usually what colleges and employers look for in a person in addition to intelligence and knowledge. Students involved in the arts take the skills they have learned with them for the rest of their lives, i.e., speaking freely before a large audience, confidence and self-assurance. Does he have any idea how many hours drama and band students spend rehearsing while maintaining better-than-average grades in science, technology, engineering and math?
